Description
A dramatic arctic seascape depicts massive jagged slabs of pack ice thrust violently upward, crushing the remnants of a wooden ship visible at the right edge — a haunting meditation on nature's indifferent power over humanity. The composition is dominated by cold whites, pale blues, and frosty greens beneath a hazy, mist-shrouded sky that stretches to a distant frozen horizon. Painted by German Romantic master Caspar David Friedrich, 'The Sea of Ice' (also known as 'The Wreck of Hope') was inspired by the failed British Arctic expeditions of the early 19th century and is now housed in the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany.
