Description
This iconic Impressionist painting depicts two figures — a weary woman and a male companion — seated apart at a marble café table, each lost in private thought, a glass of pale green absinthe before the woman and a darker drink beside the man. The mood is one of urban melancholy and social isolation, rendered in muted ochres, browns, and grays that evoke the dim interior of a Parisian café. L'Absinthe (1876) was painted by Edgar Degas and is now housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France; it is considered one of the most compelling social commentaries of 19th-century French Impressionism.
