Description

This luminous painting depicts a ballet rehearsal in progress on a grand stage, with groups of dancers in white tutus scattered across the scene — some stretching and warming up at left, others posed mid-movement at center and right, all bathed in the soft, diffuse light of a theater interior. The composition captures the informal energy and repetitive discipline behind the polished performance, a hallmark of Edgar Degas's celebrated dance series. Degas, the 19th-century French Impressionist master, returned repeatedly to the Paris Opéra as his subject, immortalizing its backstage world in paintings, pastels, and prints that now rank among the most recognized works in Western art.
