Description

This richly hand-colored engraving depicts the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the universe, with a detailed terrestrial globe at the center encircled by concentric celestial spheres bearing the zodiac, planetary orbits, and Latin inscriptions. Allegorical figures, cherubs, and scholars fill the ornate corners, lending the composition a grand Baroque theatrical quality. The plate — titled 'Scenographia Systematis Mundani Ptolemaici' — appeared in Andreas Cellarius's landmark celestial atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660), one of the most celebrated astronomical atlases ever produced, which presented both Ptolemaic and Copernican cosmological systems in stunning detail.
