Description

This richly hand-colored engraving depicts the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the universe, with Earth at the center surrounded by concentric celestial spheres bearing the zodiac signs, planets, and Latin astronomical labels. Cherubs and allegorical figures float at the top, while scholars and astronomers observe globes and instruments at the lower corners, evoking the learned world of 17th-century cosmography. The work is plate 2 from Andreas Cellarius's landmark atlas 'Harmonia Macrocosmica' (Amsterdam, 1660), one of the most celebrated celestial atlases ever produced, which illustrated both ancient Ptolemaic and newer Copernican world systems in stunning baroque detail.
