Description

This richly hand-colored engraving depicts the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the universe, with the Earth at the center surrounded by concentric celestial spheres bearing the Moon, Sun, planets, and fixed stars, all enclosed within an ornate circular diagram. Allegorical figures of cherubs float in the clouds above, while groups of scholars and astronomers gather at the lower corners, debating the heavens. The plate is from Andreas Cellarius's celebrated atlas 'Harmonia Macrocosmica' (1660), a Dutch Golden Age masterpiece of celestial cartography published in Amsterdam that remains one of the most visually spectacular star atlases ever produced.
