Description

This richly hand-colored copper engraving depicts an armillary sphere — a celestial model of the Earth surrounded by the great circles of the heavens, including the horizon ring boldly labeled 'HORIZON' — rendered with zodiac bands, constellation figures, and degree graduations. Allegorical figures of classical muses and cherubs frame the composition in the clouds at each corner, lending the chart a Baroque grandeur. The plate originates from Andreas Cellarius's landmark celestial atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica (Amsterdam, 1660), widely regarded as the most beautiful star atlas ever published, which illustrated both Ptolemaic and Copernican cosmological systems for a European scholarly audience.
