Description

This richly hand-colored celestial chart depicts the Southern Hemisphere of the night sky as an ornate spherical map filled with elaborately illustrated constellations — mythological figures, beasts, and sea creatures rendered in vivid detail against a warm parchment ground. Surrounding the hemisphere, allegorical figures including Atlas, reclining scholars, and angelic personifications of the winds frame the composition in the grand Baroque tradition. The plate is from Andreas Cellarius's landmark atlas 'Harmonia Macrocosmica' (Amsterdam, 1660), considered one of the most beautiful celestial atlases ever produced, depicting the southern stellar hemisphere using equal-proportion spherical projection.
