Description

This richly hand-colored engraving from Andreas Cellarius's landmark celestial atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) depicts a cross-section of the geocentric universe, showing concentric spheres of the planets, stars, and heavens arranged around the Earth at center. Vibrant bands of gold, rose, teal, and blue represent successive celestial orbs, while cherubs float among clouds in the four corners, lending the diagram a Baroque grandeur. Cellarius's Harmonia Macrocosmica, published in Amsterdam by Johannes Janssonius, is considered the most beautiful celestial atlas ever produced and remains a treasured piece of the history of astronomy and cartography.
