Description

This richly hand-colored celestial hemisphere chart by Dutch-German cartographer Andreas Cellarius depicts the southern night sky populated with elaborately illustrated Christian-themed constellations — figures of saints, angels, and biblical symbols replacing the traditional Greco-Roman star groupings. Originally published in Cellarius's landmark atlas 'Harmonia Macrocosmica' (1660), the map is framed by ornate baroque vignettes of cherubs, allegorical figures, and subsidiary celestial globes set against billowing clouds. The 'Harmonia Macrocosmica' is considered one of the most beautiful celestial atlases ever produced and represents the apex of 17th-century Dutch Golden Age cartographic art.
