Description
This iconic Renaissance panel painting depicts the goddess Venus reclining alert and watchful opposite the sleeping war god Mars, while mischievous satyrs play with his discarded armor and lance. The composition conveys the triumph of love over war, rendered in Botticelli's characteristic graceful line and luminous flesh tones against a verdant myrtle grove. Painted around 1485 by Sandro Botticelli for a Florentine patron, likely the Vespucci family, the work is now housed in the National Gallery in London and is celebrated as one of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.
