Description

This engraved plate depicts the constellation Lupus (the Wolf) as a snarling beast impaled on a spear, surrounded by precisely positioned stars of varying magnitudes rendered as sunburst symbols against a finely stippled celestial background. The image comes from Johann Bayer's Uranometria (1603), the landmark star atlas published in Augsburg, Germany, which was the first to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars with Greek letters.
