Description

This engraved plate from Johann Bayer's landmark 1603 star atlas Uranometria depicts Canis Major, the Great Dog, rendered as a rearing hound adorned with decorative star rosettes marking its principal stars, set against a field of additional stellar positions and faint grid lines. Uranometria was the first star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced the still-used Bayer designation system (Greek letters assigned to stars by brightness).
