Description

This engraved celestial chart depicts the constellation Serpens — the Serpent — rendered as a coiling, scaled snake whose body winds dramatically across a gridded star field, with individual stars marked by radiating sun-like symbols along its length. The image is a plate from Johann Bayer's Uranometria (1603), the landmark star atlas published in Augsburg that introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars by Greek letters within each constellation. The aged, cream-toned engraving carries the refined precision and antique gravitas characteristic of early seventeenth-century scientific illustration.
