This antique celestial engraving depicts the constellation Scorpius — the scorpion — rendered in elegant line work with stars of varying magnitudes shown as graduated circles, overlaid on the band of the Milky Way rendered in horizontal hatching. The image is a plate from Johann Bayer's Uranometria (1603), the landmark star atlas published in Augsburg that was the first to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars with Greek letters.
