Description

This engraved plate from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603) depicts the constellation Piscis Austrinus — the Southern Fish — rendered as a large, coiling sea creature with an open mouth and ornate scaled body. Overlaid across the figure are the mapped stars of the constellation, shown as circular symbols of varying sizes to denote stellar magnitude, along with coordinate grid lines. Uranometria, published in Augsburg, was the first star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars with Greek letters.
