Description
This engraved plate depicts the constellation Orion as a robed, bearded hunter raising a club aloft, with key stars labeled in their classical positions — Betelgeuse at the shoulder and Rigel at the foot. The image originates from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603), the first atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and the work that introduced the Bayer designation system still used to name stars today. Rendered in fine engraving on aged cream paper, the composition blends scientific precision with the rich mythological illustration style of the early 17th century.
