Description

This finely detailed copper engraving depicts the constellation Orion as a mighty hunter, shown in profile with arm raised and club aloft, his body mapped with the stars of the constellation rendered as ornate sunburst symbols. The image is Plate 28 from Johann Bayer's Uranometria, published in Augsburg in 1603 — the first star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and a landmark work in the history of astronomy that introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars.
