Description
This engraved star chart depicts the constellation Libra — the Scales — rendered in the meticulous style of Johann Bayer's landmark celestial atlas Uranometria (1603), the first atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere. Individual stars are shown as graduated circles indicating magnitude, connected by elegant curvilinear lines forming the traditional figure of a balance scale, with Latin annotations and coordinate grid lines overlaid throughout. Uranometria revolutionized astronomical cartography by introducing the now-standard Bayer designation system for naming stars with Greek letters.
