Description

This engraved plate from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603) depicts several southern sky constellations rendered as elaborate mythological and exotic creatures — including Grus (the Crane), Pavo (the Peacock), Phoenix, and Indus — each mapped with star positions marked by starburst symbols and connected by constellation lines. The composition is richly detailed in the baroque engraving tradition, conveying the wonder of the then-newly charted southern celestial hemisphere. Uranometria, published in Augsburg, was the first star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced many of the southern constellations still recognized today, making it a foundational document in the history of astronomy.
