Description

This engraved star chart depicts the constellation Hydra — the great water serpent of the southern sky — along with Corvus (the crow) and Crater (the cup), rendered with elegantly stylized stars of varying magnitudes and fine grid lines. The image originates from Johann Bayer's landmark celestial atlas Uranometria, published in Augsburg in 1603, the first printed atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and famous for introducing the Greek-letter stellar designation system (Bayer designations) still used by astronomers today.
