Description

This antique celestial chart depicts the constellation Cygnus — the Swan — rendered as a magnificent bird in mid-flight, its wings spread wide across a field of carefully graded stars and the faint wash of the Milky Way. The engraving comes from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603), the first atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and the work that introduced the Greek-letter star-naming system (Bayer designations) still used by astronomers today.
