Description

This celestial engraving depicts the constellation Corona Borealis — the Northern Crown — as a delicate wreath of flowers and foliage encircling a ring of stars at the composition's center, surrounded by additional scattered stars of varying magnitudes rendered as sunburst symbols against a lightly gridded sky. Diagonal lines representing the ecliptic and celestial coordinates cross the field, lending the image its characteristic cartographic precision. The plate is drawn from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603), the first printed star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and the work that introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars by Greek letter within each constellation.
