Description

This copper-plate engraving from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603) depicts a cluster of southern hemisphere constellations rendered as mythological creatures and figures, overlaid with precise stellar coordinates and radial grid lines. Uranometria, published in Augsburg, was the first star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced the still-used Bayer designation system for naming stars by Greek letter. The aged parchment tones, intricate linework, and overlapping constellation figures — including what appear to be avian, serpentine, and aquatic forms — lend this piece a rare antique cartographic elegance.
