Description
This elaborately engraved title page from Johann Bayer's Uranometria (1603) depicts a grand architectural cartouche flanked by classical allegorical figures, with celestial and mythological imagery crowning the composition. Uranometria, published in Augsburg, Germany, was a landmark star atlas — the first to systematically cover the entire celestial sphere and introduce the now-standard system of labeling stars with Greek letters (Bayer designations). The Latin text proclaims the work's purpose: a comprehensive schema of all asterisms, drawn by a new method and engraved on copper plates, dedicated to the ancient astronomical traditions of Atlas and Hercules.
