Description

This engraved celestial chart depicts Aquila, the Eagle constellation, shown as a great bird with wings spread wide, clutching a human figure — a classical mythological representation from Johann Bayer's landmark star atlas Uranometria (1603). Uranometria was the first major star atlas to cover the entire celestial sphere and introduced the still-used Bayer designation system, labeling stars with Greek letters. Stellar positions are marked with ornate sunburst symbols of varying sizes indicating magnitude, and faint grid lines overlay the aged cream-toned parchment background.
