This striking illustration depicts two Great Auks — Pinguinus impennus — rendered in Audubon's signature naturalistic style: one bird swims in choppy green-gray waters while the other stands proudly on a coastal rock, both displaying their distinctive black-and-white plumage and large grooved bills. The dramatic cliffside seascape background evokes the rugged North Atlantic habitat once home to this now-extinct flightless bird. Originally published in Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' (1827–1838), this plate is among the most historically poignant in the series, as the Great Auk was hunted to extinction by the mid-19th century.
