Description

This naturalist plate depicts two Passenger Pigeons — the upper bird a female, the lower a male — perched on a branch with dried autumn leaves, their postures elegantly intertwined. The illustration is reproduced from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America,' originally published between 1827 and 1838, in which Audubon portrayed North American bird species in life-size detail using watercolor and mixed media. The Passenger Pigeon (Columba migratoria), once the most numerous bird in North America, was declared extinct in 1914, making Audubon's vivid documentation an invaluable historical and scientific record.
