Description

This striking plate from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts three Pileated Woodpeckers — two adults and one juvenile — clinging to a dead tree trunk entwined with wild grapevine heavy with dark berries. The birds' bold red crests, black-and-white plumage, and animated poses convey Audubon's signature lifelike naturalism. Originally engraved by Robert Havell Jr. in London, 'Birds of America' (1827–1838) is regarded as one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, celebrated for its life-size, scientifically accurate illustrations of North American birds.
