Description

Two Pigeon Hawks — now commonly known as the Merlin — are depicted perched and in mid-flight on a leafy branch, rendered with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and vivid naturalism. The upper bird displays its boldly barred tail feathers and brown-streaked plumage, while the lower bird fans its wings in dynamic motion. This plate (No. 92) is from Audubon's landmark work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated natural history publications ever produced, originally engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr. in London.
