Description

This luminous plate depicts two Black Warrior hawks — now known as the dark-morph Buteo — perched on bare branches against a soft cream background, rendered with Audubon's signature naturalistic precision. One bird faces upward in deep chocolate-brown plumage while the other, in streaked juvenile dress, angles downward with talons gripping the branch. Originally published in Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, this plate showcases his characteristic life-size portraiture of North American birds.
