Description
This striking plate from Audubon's landmark publication 'The Birds of America' depicts an osprey (fish hawk) in dramatic mid-air action, talons firmly gripping a freshly caught fish against a pale coastal backdrop. The bird's dark brown wings are spread wide while its white underbelly and fierce, masked gaze create a powerful sense of predatory energy. Originally engraved by Robert Havell Jr. and published between 1827 and 1838, 'The Birds of America' is celebrated as one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, featuring life-size illustrations of North American birds.
