Description

This naturalist plate from John James Audubon's landmark 'Birds of America' series depicts two Tyrant Flycatcher birds perched among lush green heart-shaped leaves and delicate hanging catkins, rendered with the meticulous botanical and ornithological detail that made Audubon famous. The upper bird displays soft gray-white plumage while the lower bird features striking black and chestnut tones, capturing the species' sexual dimorphism with scientific precision. Audubon's 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, originally issued as hand-colored aquatint engravings in a monumental double-elephant folio format.
