Description

This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts a Winter Hawk (now identified as a Red-shouldered Hawk) swooping low through marshland grasses, wings dramatically spread as it descends upon prey. The composition captures Audubon's signature naturalistic detail — the bird's mottled brown-and-cream plumage rendered with precision against lush, dark green reeds and wetland vegetation.
