Description
This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' depicts two Bay-breasted Warblers perched on a flowering cotton plant branch, the male above displaying his rich chestnut and buff plumage and the female below in her subtler tones. Audubon's 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, featuring life-size illustrations of North American birds. The warm cream background, delicate pink blooms, and precise botanical detail give this plate the refined naturalist elegance characteristic of Audubon's celebrated double-elephant folio.
