Description

A delicately rendered Swamp Sparrow perches on a slender branch beneath broad, lobed green leaves and a white blossom, depicted with the precise naturalism that made Audubon's 'Birds of America' a landmark of ornithological illustration. The composition is airy and elegant, with the small brown-streaked bird occupying the lower-center of the cream-toned plate. This plate, numbered LXIV, appeared in Audubon's monumental double-elephant folio first published between 1827 and 1838, celebrated for its life-size, lifelike portrayals of North American birds.
