Description
This striking natural-history illustration depicts two Red-shouldered Hawks perched on a branch draped with Spanish moss, rendered in Audubon's signature botanically precise, life-size style. The upper bird displays boldly barred plumage and a fanned tail, while the lower bird spreads its wings to reveal rich rufous shoulder patches — the field mark for which the species is named. Plate 56 comes from Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever produced, originally engraved in London by Robert Havell Jr. at double-elephant folio size.
