Description

A richly detailed naturalist illustration depicts a male Mallard-like duck — the 'Bemaculated Duck' — standing alert among marsh grasses, its iridescent green head tilted upward as if calling, with warm chestnut, gray, and olive plumage rendered in exquisite detail. A tiny insect hovers above in the upper left, adding life and scale to the composition. This plate (No. 338) is from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications in history, praised for its life-size, scientifically precise yet artistically vivid portrayals of North American birds.
