Description

This exquisite plate from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts Bonaparte's Gull (Chroicocephalus philadelphia) in multiple poses — one bird in dramatic mid-flight with wings spread wide, revealing the species' distinctive black-tipped primaries and dark hood, while two others stand calmly on a shoreline before a moody coastal sky. Audubon's naturalistic rendering captures the graceful elegance and anatomical precision that made his ornithological work legendary. Originally published between 1827 and 1838 as a series of life-size hand-colored aquatint engravings, 'Birds of America' is widely regarded as one of the finest natural history publications ever produced.
