Description

A Black Skimmer soars in dynamic flight over a choppy green-gray sea, its dramatic dark wings fully spread and its distinctive red-and-black bill angled toward the water below. The composition captures the bird's elegant aerodynamic form against a softly clouded sky, rendered in Audubon's characteristically precise and lifelike naturalist style. This plate (No. 323) appeared in John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications ever produced, originally engraved and hand-colored in aquatint by Robert Havell Jr.
