Description

This hand-colored engraving depicts two Red-headed Ducks — a vivid chestnut-headed male standing alert beside a subtler brown female resting on a muddy bank, with marsh grasses and a soft pastel sky in the background. The plate is taken from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), widely regarded as the finest ornithological illustration series ever produced, comprising 435 life-sized hand-colored aquatints. The Red-headed Duck (Aythya americana), a diving duck native to North America, is rendered with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and artistic naturalism.
