Description

Two Lesser Terns are depicted in graceful flight against a moody, cloud-filled grey sky — one soaring with wings spread wide, the other angled upward with tail fanned — rendered in Audubon's characteristically precise and lifelike naturalist style. This plate is number 319 from John James Audubon's monumental ornithological work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated natural history publications ever produced, originally engraved and hand-colored in aquatint by Robert Havell Jr. in London.
