Description
This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' series depicts Long-tailed Ducks—also known as Oldsquaw—in characteristic poses: two perched on rocky outcroppings and two swimming in the foreground waters, rendered with Audubon's signature naturalistic precision. The composition showcases the ducks' striking brown, white, and dark plumage against a soft coastal landscape with distant cliffs and pale blue sky. 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, with each plate originally engraved and hand-colored at life-size scale.
