Description

Two Spotted Sandpipers are depicted along a shallow, reed-lined stream bank, one crouching low over mossy rocks and the other stepping forward with wings slightly raised, captured with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and naturalistic grace. The muted blue-green water, soft grassy background, and delicate foliage create a serene wetland atmosphere typical of Audubon's landmark work 'The Birds of America.' John James Audubon, the Franco-American ornithologist and painter, produced this plate as part of his monumental double-elephant folio series documenting North American bird species in their natural habitats, published between 1827 and 1838.
