Description

This plate from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts a Cayenne Tern — now commonly identified as a Sandwich Tern — in dramatic mid-dive against a moody gray sky, its elegant white plumage and swept-back wings rendered with remarkable naturalistic precision. The bird's vivid orange-red bill and contrasting black cap draw the eye to the center of the composition, capturing the seabird's athleticism and grace. Audubon's 'Birds of America,' first published between 1827 and 1838 in London and Edinburgh, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, with life-sized illustrations engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr.
