Description

This hand-colored engraving from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' depicts two Greater Yellowlegs (then called Tell-tale Godwit or Snipe) in a marshy wetland habitat, one standing alert with wings partially spread and the other foraging low to the ground. The warm cream background, delicate wetland landscape, and richly detailed plumage — gray-brown feathers, bright yellow legs, and long slender bills — capture Audubon's signature naturalistic precision. 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, with original double-elephant folio plates now valued as masterworks of American art history.
