Description
A striking Little Blue Heron stands prominently on a muddy bank, its rich blue-gray plumage and elongated crest feathers rendered in exquisite detail against a soft, luminous wetland landscape at dusk. A smaller white egret wades in the shallow waters behind it, framed by tall marsh grasses and a warm peach sky. This plate is from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications in history, known for its life-sized, naturalistic depictions of North American bird species.
