Description

This striking plate depicts two Common Loons (Great Northern Divers) in their natural wetland habitat — one resting low on the water in muted winter plumage and one standing upright in dramatic iridescent breeding plumage with its beak open, set against reeds and misty mountain scenery. The work is Plate 306 from John James Audubon's monumental 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), one of the most celebrated ornithological publications in history, originally engraved in double-elephant folio format. Audubon's signature life-size, naturalistically posed bird illustrations revolutionized wildlife art and remain among the most sought-after prints in American natural history.
