Description

This naturalist plate from John James Audubon's monumental 'Birds of America' series depicts Ruddy Turnstones in two poses — a pair caught mid-flight with wings dramatically spread, their bold rufous, black, and white plumage vivid against a soft coastal background, while a third bird stands composed on a sandy shore. The composition captures the species with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and dynamic artistic flair. 'Birds of America,' published between 1827 and 1838, is considered one of the greatest ornithological works ever produced, featuring life-size illustrations engraved and hand-colored from Audubon's original watercolors.
