Description

Two Barnacle Geese are depicted in dynamic interaction against a soft, atmospheric coastal landscape of muted blues and browns — one bird rearing upright with beak open, the other lowering its head in a submissive posture, both rendered in crisp black, white, and gray plumage with Audubon's signature naturalistic precision. This plate (No. 296) is from John James Audubon's monumental work 'The Birds of America' (1827–1838), widely regarded as one of the greatest ornithological publications ever produced, originally engraved and hand-colored in aquatint by Robert Havell Jr. in London. The rocky shoreline and distant cliffs evoke the coastal habitats of northern Europe and the Arctic, the natural breeding grounds of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis), lending the composition both scientific accuracy and painterly drama.
